Let the point charges be q1 and q2 that are separated by a distance r.

Electrostatic force f is given as

begin mathsize 14px style f space equals space fraction numerator q subscript 1 q subscript 2 over denominator 4 pi epsilon subscript o r squared end fraction end style  ..................... (1)

Now if these same two charges are in a dielectric medium of dielectric constant εr and
force between them is same as given in eqn.(1)

Then we have

begin mathsize 14px style f space equals space fraction numerator q subscript 1 q subscript 2 over denominator 4 pi epsilon subscript o space epsilon subscript r space d squared end fraction end style  .........................(2)
where d is distance between charges in dielectric medium

from eqn.(1) and (2) , we get

begin mathsize 14px style d space equals space fraction numerator r over denominator square root of epsilon subscript r end root end fraction end style
