There is a rectangular onion storehouse in the farm of Mr.Ratnakarrao at tivasa. The length of rectangular base is more than its breadth by 21m and diagonal is more than length by 6m. Find length and breadth of a storehouse.

Expert Answer
Let the breadth of the rectangular storehouse be x m.
Length = x + 21
Diagonal = 6 + length = x + 27
By Pythagoras theorem, we have
Length2 + Breadth2 = Diagonal2
(x + 21)2 + x2 = (x + 27)2
x2 + 441 + 42x + x2 = x2 + 729 + 54x
x2 - 12x - 288 = 0
x2 - 24x + 12x - 288 = 0
x(x - 24) + 12(x - 24) = 0
(x - 24)(x + 12) = 0
Therefore, x = -12, 24
