Let x and y be the two digits such that x<y.
According to the question,
xy=40 ... (i)
y - x = 3 ... (ii)
y = x+3
Substituting y in (i), we have
x(x+3)=40
x2+3x-40=0
x2+8x-5x-40=0
x(x+8)-5(x+8)=0
(x+8)(x-5)=0
x = -8 or x=5
x can't be negative
Therefore, x=5
Therefore, y=5+3=8
Hence, the number is 85.
