Let the thief originally steal x diamond.

According to the condition,

No of dimonds(1st wathchman) =
No of dimonds(2nd wathchman) =
No of dimonds(3rd wathchman) =
He escaped with one diamond.

Therefore the thief originally steal 8 diamond.
