The number of girls in class IX is 2 more than thrice the number of boys.  Represent the above statement by a linear equation in variables ‘x’ and   ‘y’.

Let the number of girls and the number of boys in Class IX be x and y respectively.
 
According to the condition, we get
 
x = 3y + 2
→ x - 3y - 2 = 0
