Robert Hooke first invented the dead cells from a thin slice of bottle cork but A.V.Leewenhoek discovered the living cell. So the cells described by Hooke did not possess the protoplasm since they were dead cells.


Purkinje coined the term protoplasm for the fluid substance of the cell.
