Rahul took some grains of boiled rice in test tube ‘A’ and Akshay took boiled and chewed rice in
test tube ‘B’. Both of them poured 1-2 drops of iodine solution into the test tube and observed the
colour change. What colour change would they have observed? Give reasons for your answer.

Expert Answer
- Due to the presence of starch in rice, the colour of the rice solution upon addition of iodine solution changes to blackish bluish in colour.
- However, when rice is chewed, saliva mixes with the rice, and the starch is broken down into simple sugars. This results in the change of the blackish-blue colour into pink colour.
- Therefore, Rahul's mixture in test tube A will show blue-black colour while Akshay's mixture in test tube B will turn pinkish.
