Q1 What is wood alcohol and why is it called so? Q2 Why secondary alcohols are prepared using aldehyde other than formaldehyde?

1. Wood alcohol is methanol. Because it was once produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of wood.
2. To prepare secondary alcohol which has feneral structural unit C-C(OH)-C, we need a substrate which can provide this form. The reaction with formaldehyde (HCHO) leads to a primary alcohol.
We hope that clarifies your query.
