Let us assume after t seconds, cyclist overtake the bus.

Distance travelled by cyclist = speed×time = 20×t  m  .....................(1)

Distance travelled by bus = (1/2)×a×t2 = (1/2)×2×t2  =  t2 m ........................(2)

Since initially cyclist was 96 m behind the bus,  we have  from eqn.(1) and (2)

t2 = 20×t - 96   or  t2 - 20×t + 96 = 0 ...................(3)

By solving eqn.(3) we get t = 8 s or t = 12 s

At t = 8 s,  cyclist overtake the bus.  At t = 8 s, speed of cyclist is greater than speed of bus.

 At t= 12 s , bus will pick up enough speed to overtake the cyclist
