Steps for finding the volume of the piece of stone :-
1. Take a clean graduated cylinder.Fill it partly with water.Note the reading of the lower meniscus of water.
2. Now, tie the stone with a thin string and lower it gently into the cylinder so that no water splashes out and the stone is completely immersed in water.
3. The level of the water rises. Note the new reading of the lower meniscus of water.
4. since the stone displaces water equal to its own volume, so the difference between the two readings;
i.e. second reading - first reading gives the volume of the stone.
This method is called 'displacement method'.This method can be used to find out the volume of any irregular solid.
