J.E. Purkinje used the term protoplasm for the living substance present inside the cell. 'Living substance' here is the cytoplasm and the nucleus.Why not cell membrane also?

Cell membrane is also living. Protoplasm includes cytoplasm and the nucleus. It does not include cell membrane or cell wall.
Protoplast is the living part of cell and does not include the cell wall. Protoplast includes cell membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus.
