In first part of ascent, vertical distance S1 travelled is given by,    begin mathsize 12px style S subscript 1 space equals space 1 half cross times a cross times t squared end style  .............................(1)
velocity u after time t is given by,    u = a×t

for second part of ascent, let us use the equation of motion " v2 = u2-2aS " to get the vertical distance S2 using the condition,  final velocity v=0.

hence, we have   begin mathsize 12px style S subscript 2 space equals space fraction numerator a squared t squared over denominator 2 cross times 2 a end fraction space equals space 1 fourth a t squared end style
total depth, S1 + S2 = (3/4)×a×t2
