Giving Cathode and anode reaction of Nickel Cadmium cell illustrate the overall cell reaction.

It consists of an anode made up of Cadmium and a metal grid coated with nickel oxide as Cathode. The electrolyte is Potassium Hydroxide. At anode the Cadmium metal undergoes oxidation; Cadmium loses electrons and changes to Cd2+ ions which react with Hydroxide ions from the electrolyte to give cadmium (II) Hydroxide.
anode reaction
(i) Cd(s) + 2OH-(aq) ==> Cd(OH)2(s) + 2e-
At Cathode Nickel oxide undergoes Reduction giving Nickel hydroxide.

(ii) NiO2(s) + 2e-  + 2H2O ==> Ni(OH)2(s) + 2OH-(aq)
overall cell reaction

(iii) Cd(s) + NiO2(s) + 2H2O ==> Cd(OH)2(s) + Ni(OH)2(s)
