Classification of units :- (i ) Fundamental units and (ii) derived units
(i) Fundamental units are given in table below
Quantity | Units |
Distance | Metre ( m ) |
Mass | kilogram ( kg ) |
Time | seconds ( s) |
Temperature | Kelvin ( K ) |
Current | Ampere ( A ) |
Luminance | Candela ( Ca ) |
Amount of substance | Mole ( mole) |
(ii) Derived units are expressed in terms of fundamental units
Quantity | Units |
Area = Length × Length | m2 |
Volume = Length × Length × Length | m3 |
Density = mass / volume | kg / m3 |
speed = distance / time | m / s |
acceleration = change in speed / time | m / s2 |
Force = mass × acceleration | N = kg m /s2 |
Workdone = force × distance | J = N × m |
