Classification of units :-   (i ) Fundamental units  and (ii) derived units

(i) Fundamental units are  given in table below

 Quantity Units Distance Metre  ( m ) Mass kilogram ( kg ) Time seconds ( s) Temperature Kelvin ( K ) Current Ampere ( A ) Luminance Candela ( Ca ) Amount of substance Mole  ( mole)

(ii) Derived units are expressed in terms of fundamental units

 Quantity Units Area = Length × Length m2 Volume = Length × Length × Length m3 Density = mass / volume kg / m3 speed = distance / time m / s acceleration = change in speed / time m / s2 Force = mass × acceleration N = kg m /s2 Workdone = force × distance J = N × m
