Question: From the top of a cliff 50m high, the angle of depression of a buoy is 30 degrees. Calculate to the nearest meter, the distance of the buoy from the foot of the cliff.
Solution:

Let AB be the cliff and C be the buoy.

Given, AB = 50 m.

Also, angle ACB = 30o

therefore space AB over BC equals tan space 30 degree
rightwards double arrow BC equals fraction numerator AB over denominator tan space 30 degree end fraction equals fraction numerator 50 over denominator begin display style fraction numerator 1 over denominator square root of 3 end fraction end style end fraction
rightwards double arrow BC equals 50 square root of 3 space straight m

Hence, the buoy is at a distance of img m from the foot of the cliff.
