Find the potential energy of a system of four particles placed at the vertices of a square of side l. Also obtain the potential at the centre of the square.

It is assumed that this question is about potential energy in gravitational field.
potential energy of a mass m in gravitational field = G×M×m/(R+h)..................(1)

Where G is gravitational constant, M is mass of earth, R is radius of earth,
h is the height above the earth's surface where the given mass m is placed.
 
By using the expression (1), Potential energy E of the system of 4 particles each of mass m placed
at the corner of a square of side l is given by
 
E = G×M×m×  { [ (2/(R+h) ]  +[ 2/(R+l+h) ] } ....................(2)

where h is the height above earth surface where the given square is placed, as shown in figure
 
If a particle of mass m is placed at centre of square its potential energy = (G×M×m) / (R+h+0.5×l)
