This test is used for differentiate between Primary, Secondary & Tertiary. In this test Luca’s reagent (anhydrous Zinc Chloride + Conc. HCl) is treated with unknown alcohol at room temperature.

 

The alcohol react with HCl to form an alkyl chloride which is being insoluble I water forms a turbidity.
 
a)If turbidity forms immediately then alcohol is tertiary.
b)If turbidity forms within five minutes then alcohol is secondary.  
b)If there is no turbidity at room temperature the then alcohol is primary.
