Ethylbenzene is prepared by first acylaion of benzene and then reduction and not by direct alkylation. Suggest possible reason.

Industrially, alkyl groups can be substituted into a benzene ring using a variant on Friedel-Crafts alkylation.But we do it by treating benzene with an alkene and a mixture of aluminium chloride and hydrogen chloride as the catalyst as this is a cheaper method because it saves having to make the chloroalkane first.
