Expert Answer:
Properties of metals.
1. Metals are electropositive in nature i.e. they loose electrons readily.
2. Metals on reaction with oxygen form metal oxides which are basic in nature.
4Na + O2 ----------> 2Na2O
2Mg + O2 ------------> 2MgO
but their are some metal oxides which are amphoteric in nature ex. aluminium oxide, zinc oxide i.e. they behave as acid as well as basic.
these metal oxides when react with water form alkali
Na2O + H2O ----------> 2NaOH
3. Metals react with water to form metal oxides and metal hydroxides.
2K + 2H2O ---------> 2KOH(aq) + H2 (g)
and hydrogen is released.
4. Reaction with acids
when metals react with acids they form neutral salts and hydrogen is released.
2Mg (aq) + 4HCl ---------> 2MgCl2 + 2H2(g)
5. Reaction with solution of other metal salts
In this more reactive metal displaces less reactive metal.
Zn (s) + CuSO4 (aq)-------------> ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
