At a children's party, each gave an offering to each.  If a total of 132 gifts have been given, state the number of children.

suppose there are 10 students
then 1 students will give 9 gifts
10 students = 90 gifts
 
so x students = x(x-1)
x(x-1)=132
x2 - x - 132 = 0
(x - 12)(x + 11)=0
x = 12
x = -11
so 12 students
