In selective breeding, the the plants or animals from the existing stock that have the desired characteristics are selected and are allowed to breed. This method allows desirable qualities of the parents to be displayed in the offsprings. The best offsprings are then bred further. This continues until all offspring display the characteristics that are wanted. This leads to production of new breeds of animals or plants.
Advantages:
i) Organisms with the desired features can be produced
ii)It is possible to obtain high yielding crops, by this method.
iii) Disease resistant plants can be developed.
iv) Farm animals with desired characteristics can be obtained e.g. high milk yielding cows , hens that lay more eggs.
v) Less costly to small scale farmers.
