A block of mass 10 kg is suspeneded with a long rope.A bullet of mass 50g moving at 0.3km/s hits and gets embedded int that block.What will be the vertical rise of the block?(g=980 cm/s2)

Expert Answer
Initial momentum of bullet = m v = 50×10-3 × 300 = 15 N s ...................(1)
After embedding, bullet and block of mass move together with velocity V
Hence final momentum = (M+m) V = 10.05 × V .....................(2)
Hence speed of block of mass with embedded bullet = 15/10.05 ≈ 1.49 m/s
Maximum potential energy = Maximum kinetic energy
(M+m) g h = (1/2) (M+m) V2
or maximu height reached h = V2 / (2g) = (1.49×1.49) /(2×9.8) ≈ 0.113 m = 11.3 cm
