Expert Answer
The Indian National Movement was one of the most democratic and egalitarian mass movements in the history of the modern world. Its leaders understood the importance of spreading democratic values to every section of the society, especially so since India was a colony of the British empire. Also, since there were many social evils and differences within the Indian society itself (castiesm, communalism, ethnic differences, etc,), it was believed that a common democratic status would help in the political consolidation of the nation.
