Expert Answer
People were dissatisfied with the British rule between 1870 and 1880s due to the following reasons:
- In 1878, the British passed the 'Arms Act'. According to this Act, no Indian could possess weapons without a valid license. However, the English and the Europeans could keep arms without license. This caused resentment against the British.
- The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878. It empowered the government to confiscate the newspapers if they printed anything against the government.
- The Ilbert Bill Controversy further created dissatisfaction among the Indians. Lord Rippon passed the Ilbert Bil. According to this Bill, the Europeans and the English could be tried by the Indian judges. The English protested against the bill and as a result, the Bill was withdrawn.
