Rani Laxmibai was the brave queen of Jhansi who led the revolt of 1857 in Jhasi against the British. She was married to the king of Jhansi, Maharaja Gangadhar Rao who later died without having male heir. Following established Hindu tradition, just before his death the maharaja adopted a boy as his heir. But after his death, the british refused to recognize him as the legal heir to the throne and decaled that they will annex the state.
