Why Li and Mg both react slowly with water  and

Why Li2O and MgO are much less soluble in water ?

Lithium and Magnesium reacts slowly in water but reacts vigorously with steam. The reason why they doesn't really react with cold water is that they become coated with lithium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide respectively, which is insoluble, so it prevents water coming into contact with them.
