Expert Answer
Rainbow occurs due to diffraction and dispersion of sunlight by tiny water droplets when it is raining and at same time if we get sunshine.
Tiny water droplets are acting like prism. Hence due to diffraction the path of light deviates. Deviation will be very small due to size of tiny droplets. But due to presence of continuous droplets, continuous diffraction taking plce in the path of light, hence path of light becomes circular path. Due to dispersion, we see all the colors in rainbow. Shape is semicircle because we see the rainbow from earth, other part of rainbow is not visible to us. If we see rainbow from aircraft we may be able to see the rainbow as full circle.
