When a beam of light strikes fine particles of smoke, dust, water droplets etc., the beam of light becomesvisible. This phenomenon of the scattering of light by colloidal particles is known as the Tyndall effect. The same phenomenon is observed when sunlight passes through a canopy of dense forest.

Cause of tyndall effect:The size of the colloidal particle is relatively larger than the solute particle of the true solution. The colloidal particle absorbs the energy of incident light and then scatter a part of this energy from their surfaces. Thus tyndall effect is due to scattering of light by the colloidal particles.
