the magnification produced by a spherical lens is 1/3.if the image is formed at distance of 10cm from the lens,find the position of object . also find the nature and focal length of the lens.

magnification = v/u = 10/u = 1/3
where v is lens-to-image distance, u is lens-to-object distance .
For spherical lens, u is negative by sign convention , Hence from above eqn, v = -10 cm and u = -30 cm
we have lens equation, ( 1/ v ) - (1/u) = 1/f or (-1/10) + (1/30) = 1/f or f = -15 cm
Position of the image , v = -10 cm ( image is formed at same sie of object )
focal length -15 cm , since focal length is -ve, this spherical lens is concave lens (diverging lens )
