Show that 1. Shearing strain = 2×longitudinal  strain

Let l be the side of square plate and this square plate is undergoing shera stress
 
If we assume Δl be the change in dimension for both side, change in area  ΔA is given by
 
ΔA = ( l + Δl )2 - l2 = l2 + 2 l Δl + ( Δl )2 - l2
 
Neglecting higher powers of Δl, we get, ΔA = 2 l Δl 
 
Hence ( ΔA / A ) = ( 2 l Δl ) / l2 = 2 ( Δl / l )
 
Hence Shearing strain is twice of longitudinal strain
