In the initial phase after the formation of the Indian National Congress, the organisation was dominated by Moderates. Popular leaders were Dadabhai Naoroji,Surendranath BanerjeePherozeshah Mehta and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. These leaders hailed from the nouveau educated middle class and practised professions such as teaching, law, journalism and industry. They held the belief that the British rule had largely been beneficial for India and that at the appropriate time the British authorities could be persuaded to introduce political reforms and transfer political power to the natives. They also firmly held the view that Indians were not yet politically mature enough to govern themselves.
