answered-by-expert Expert Answer
After the British began to establish their dominance in India in the mid-18th century, the nawabs began to lose their power because of the following reasons:
  • The British had the superior military might and the local nawabs were not able to match the British power and hence they negotiated with the British on the weaker terms.
  • The British through various laws and Acts restricted the power of the nawabs and the kings. For example, they forced the Indian rulers to sign the Subsidiary Alliance System because of which they began to interfere in their administrative affairs of the kings. The British Residents tried to convince the Nawabs & Rajas to take decisions according to the convenience of the British.
  • Through these Acts, the British also drained the financial treasury of the Nawabs rendering them weak and thus making them unable to pose any serious challenges to their authority.
  • The British also interfered in the law of succession and hence made new nawabs as their puppets.
