The partition of Bengal in 1905 caused widespread agitation in Bengal. The partition separated Bengal into two provinces: East Bengal, which was mostly Muslim, and West Bengal, which was mostly Hindu.
The partition was seen as an attempt to weaken nationalism in Bengal, which was more developed than other areas.
The partition was also seen as a "divide and rule" policy by the British government.
The Hindus of West Bengal were concerned that the partition would make them a minority in a province that would include Bihar and Orissa.
The people of Bengal responded to the partition with:
  1. Agitation: Mass meetings, rural unrest, and a swadeshi movement to boycott British goods
  2. Mourning: A day of mourning was declared, with businesses closed and people marching in the streets
  3. Swadeshi movement: This movement advocated for the boycott of British goods and the promotion of Indian-made goodsThe partition had an impact on all the states in India.
