The Indian Natinal congress in 1890's was dominated by the Moderates who believed in making petitions to the British government regarding the Indian matters. Thus, many Indians began to raise questions about the political style of the Congress. In Bengal, Maharashtra and Punjab, leaders such as Bepin Chandra Pal, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai were inclined towards following radical objectives and methods to gain independence. They criticised the moderates for their “politics of prayers”, and stressed on the importance of self-reliance and constructive work. They argued that people must rely on their own strength and believed that the British government will not give independence to India on its own. People have to fight for swaraj.
