The given figure demonstrates the experiment to determine the phenomenon of absorption of water by roots.

In this experiment, a test tube (A) filled with water is taken. A young leafy plant with its roots intact is pulled from the soil. The roots of the plant are then inserted into the test tube. Few drops of oil are then added to the test tube to prevent loss of water by evaporation. The level of water in test tube (A) is noted. A similar test tube (B) but without the plant is set as control. Both the set-ups are kept undisturbed for a day or two. We will observe that the level of water in test tube (B) remains unchanged. However, in test tube (A), the level falls, proving that water lost in test tube A was absorbed by the roots.
