In physics units refers to the the standard by which we can measure the physical quantities.
There are two kinds of units: -
1. Fundamental units or basic unit
2. Derived units
Fundamental or basic unit: A fundamental unit is that which is independent of any other unit or which can neither be changed nor be related to any other fundamental unit.
examples: - length, mass, etc.
The seven fundamental quantities and their units are as follows : -
Fundamental quantity | Unit |
Time | Second |
Length | metre |
Mass | kilogram |
Electric current | Ampere |
Temperature | Kelvin |
Amount of substance | mol |
Intensity | Candela |
Derived units: - Units which depend on the fundamental units or which can be expressed in terms of the fundamental units are called derived units.
Examples of derrived units are as follows: -
If you will see the table above you can see that the unit of these derived quantities are obtained from fundamental units.
For example: -
Area has unit m2 which is obtained from unit of fundamental quantity i.e. length whose fundamental unit is metre (m).
