how much salt must be added to 60 kg of a 20%solution of salt to increase it to a 40% solution of salt

We consider that 20% salt solution means 20% of total mass of solution is mass of salt.

If initial total mass of solution is 60 kg , then mass of salt =  60 × ( 20/100) kg = 12 kg

Hence mass of solvent = ( 60-12) kg = 48 kg

if x kg of salt is added to make 40% salt solution , then we have

by solving above expression, we get x = 20 kg

Hence 20 kg of salt is to be added to convert the solution to 40% salt solution.
