Let and are the intensities of two waves that are interfering in double slit experiment.
Resultant Intensity is given as

where θ is phase difference between the waves .
If path difference between waves is λ/4 , where λ is wavelength , then phase difference θ = (2π)/4 = π/2 .
If each wave has equal intensity and path difference between waves is λ/4 , then we get resultant
intensity from eqn.(1) as

If path difference between waves is λ/3 , where λ is wavelength , then phase difference θ = (2π)/3.
If each wave has equal intensity and path difference between waves is λ/3 , then we get resultant
intensity from eqn.(1) as
