ICSE Class 10 Answered

can turgor pressure cause bleeding in plants?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer
  • Turgor pressure is the force within the cell that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall.
  • The root pressure generated by a plant forces the cell sap to rise through the stem. This causes bleeding or oozing of the cell sap from the cut surface of the plant.
  • Excess of turgor pressure can cause the cell to burst and less pressure can cause the plant to wilt.
  • Hence, turgor pressure may not be directly responsible for bleeding in plants.
