The concentration of a solution is a measure of the amount of solute that has been dissolved in a given amount of solvent or solution. A concentrated solution is one that has a relatively large amount of dissolved solute. A dilute solution is one that has a relatively small amount of dissolved solute.
Concentration (C): It is the ratio of mass of the solute (m) which is dissolved in the solution and volume (V) of the solution.
C = m/V
The three ways to measure the concentration of a solution are molarity, mole fraction, and molality.
- Molarity (M): It is calculated by the number of moles (n) of solute and volume of solution (V).
- Mole fraction (x): It is the ratio of number of moles of particular element (ni) and total number of moles of substance (ntotal).
- Molality (m):It is measured by the number of moles (n) of a solute in terms of mass of the solvent (kg).
