2 V and 4V battery are connected in parallel , but positive polarity of 2 V is connected to negative polarity of 4 V .

Hence there is a current flow in the loop due to sum of EMFs of batteries and the magnitude of current is decided by sum of inetrnal resistances of batteries.

current I = (4+2) V / (1+1) Ω = 3 A

By knowing the current, if we determine Potential difference Vxy between X and Y , we get

Vxy = - 4 + ( 3 × 1 ) = -1 V

Actually Vxy is terminal voltage of either 4V or 2V battery when they are connected in parallel.

If we try to calculate the terminal voltage of 2V battery we get , Vxy = 2 -(3 × 1 ) = -1 V

Hence the given circuit becomes as shown below

Potential difference across A and B ,  VAB = ( -1 +3 ) V = 2 V
