A toy cart of mass 2kg is pressed against a spring. On being released the cart translates with a velocity of 4 m/s.Find the elastic P.E stored in the compressed spring.(step by step answer)

Expert Answer
m = 2 kg v = 4 m/s
When the cart is released the spring comes back to uncompressed state and pushes toy cart away.
Thus, elastic potential energy of spring is equal to change in kinetic energy of toy cart.
Elastic potential energy (U) = Kinetic energy of cart
Thus,
U = 1/2 x m x v2 = 1/2 x 2 x 42 = 16 J
Thus, elastic potential energy stored in the spring = 16 J
