MBBS students in MP can now write Medical exams is Hinglish

The Madhya Pradesh Medical University has recently declared that it will allow MBBS students to write exams in Hindi or Hinglish. Wait, what? Did we say Hinglish? Is that even a word? Though not included in the dictionary, Hinglish is a colloquial term used to signify the merging of two languages, Hindi and English.

According to the circular issued by the university on 26th May, the facility of writing medical exams in Hindi/Hinglish will be extended to the all medical students including those pursuing Homeopathy, Auurveda, MBBS, Nursing, Dental, Unani, Yoga, and Naturopathy courses from colleges affiliated to the university. And, this will be applicable for both oral and practical exams.

As of now MP is the only state that will be allowing medical students to have Hindi as an option along with English, when it comes to writing the MBBS exam. It may happen that students are unable to find a corresponding Hindi term for a scientific word. In which case they can write specific words in English. No marks will be deducted on the basis of language, as long as the answers are scientifically correct.

This decision has been arrived at after elaborate researches that show students from Hindi medium schools fare poorly in medical exams not due to the lack of merit but because they fail to express themselves in English.

As one can imagine, this move by the university has met with an array of responses from medical students themselves, parents, educators and other decision makers. Overall, the decision is lauded and appreciated. However, only time can tell the final outcome of such a revolutionary step.
