JEE Main Results Declared: With Scores in Hand, What’s Next?

JEE, or Joint Entrance Exam, is the gateway for millions of candidates who wish to pursue engineering studies. This national competitive examination shortlists candidates who can enrol in prestigious government institutes, such as the IITs, IIITs, NITs and other colleges.

The JEE Main exams are conducted in two sessions. The JEE Main Session 1 was conducted from January 24 to February 1, 2024. The Session 2 exams are scheduled for April. Based on the results of two JEE Main sessions, the candidates will be shortlisted to appear for the JEE-Advanced exam.

Approximately 12,31,874 candidates registered for JEE Mains session 1. On Feb 13, the results for the JEE Main Session 1 were announced. Candidates can learn more about the results here.

JEE Main Result Interpretation

With the JEE Main result released, India witnessed 23 candidates who secured 100 NTA scores.

Note: The NTA scores in the result are the normalised scores. They depend on the total number of candidates who appear in a session. The percentile represented in the result is not the average of the NTA score of the individual subjects. Candidates must note that percentiles differ from percentages. While the percentile is a comparative figure indicating the position, the percentage is the fraction of overall marks out of 100.

The NTA score is calculated using the following steps:

  • Raw Score Calculation: The actual marks obtained by the candidate in each subject.
  • Percentile Score Calculation: The relative performance of the candidate compared to others in the same session.
  • Normalisation: As JEE Main is conducted in two sessions, the NTA adopts a normalisation process to equate the scores. This approach ensures that candidates are not disadvantaged by variations in the difficulty level of different sessions.
  • Calculation of NTA Score: The NTA score is finally calculated based on the normalised percentile score.

Estimated Cutoffs for IIT

With the scores being released, the students request estimated cutoffs to decide their next strategy. The JEE main cutoff for the year 2024 is expected to be as follows:

  • For General category: 91+
  • For the General category with disabilities: 0.11+
  • For EWS or Economically Weaker Sections: 76+
  • For OBC NCL or Other Backward Castes (Non-Creamy Layer): 74+
  • For SC or Scheduled castes: 55+
  • For Scheduled Tribes: 40+

Non-IIT Options That Take JEE Main Score

The estimated cutoffs indicate the minimum score required to gain admission into the prestigious IITs. If the score lies below the stated figures, candidates still have the option of gaining quality education.

The NITs and IIITs have separate cutoffs that lie below those of IITs. Here is an estimated list of cutoffs for your reference:

  • For General category: 88+
  • For EWS or Economically Weaker Sections: 75+
  • For OBC NCL or Other Backward Castes (Non-Creamy Layer): 75+
  • For SC or Scheduled castes: 45+
