Inspiring Change: Engineer’s Day 2023 and the Power of Engineering

Celebrated on the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, September 15th, Engineer’s Day honours all of India's exceptional engineers. From the development of the wheel to put the first man on the moon, engineers are the backbone of this technological advancement that has defined humankind's progress.

What Defines an Engineer?

Anyone can read and write and gain an abundance of knowledge; the true worth of knowledge comes from implementing it in real life, making practical use of it, and making life simpler for those around you. Engineers bring ideas to reality and use everyday principles to create incredible machines. They continue to innovate from the ground up, considering every possible edge situation. Engineers are defined by their sheer dedication and passion for their profession, regularly updating themselves, bringing theoretical concepts of physics and chemistry to life, pushing the limit of what is possible, and redefining the scope of imagination while remaining patient and never giving up.

Building the Nation

Throughout the years, India has seen a number of outstanding engineers who have contributed to improving one or more aspects of the country. Sir Visvesvaraya himself revolutionised irrigation dam construction and established an extraordinary flood control system, earning him the Bharat Ratna in 1955. The missile man of India, none other than Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, led our country’s missile and nuclear weapons programs. Dr. Kalam also served as president from 2002 to 2007 and left behind a roadmap for the development of the country for the next twenty years.

The metro man of India and civil engineer by profession, Mr. E. Sreedharan, changed the face of public transport in India. He headed the development of the Konkan railways and was a driving force behind the establishment of the Delhi Metro, which provided safe transportation to millions. Dr. Verghese Kurien transformed India from a country that imports dairy products into the world's largest producer of milk. It made Dr. Kurien known as the revolutionary behind our country's "White Revolution" and earned him ‘Padma Shree,' ‘Padma Bhushan,' and  ‘Padma Vibhushan’.

Engineering Education in India

The Joint Entrance Examination is the way to enter some of the renowned colleges for engineering like IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and NIT (National Institute of Technology). The score of the JEE Mains determines admission to the NITs. The selected candidates from JEE Mains are allowed to take JEE Advanced, which determines admission to IITs.

Engineers are bringing change to this world through their creativity. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are the core subjects of JEE. Mastering these subjects can provide wings to the aspiring engineers of this country. The exam is open to students in class 12, and some begin studying as early as class 9.

Conclusion

"Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been," Albert Einstein famously said. Basically, Engineering is a challenging profession, but it's the one that ensures the progress of humanity. TopperLearning provides the study materials for JEE Mains and Advanced, like mock tests and chapter-wise synopsis, which assists future engineers in reaching their goal of getting into IITs.
