Expert Answer:
x2 + 6x - (a2 + 2a - 8) = 0
x2 + 6x - (a2 + 2a + 1 - 9) = 0
x2 + 6x - (a2 + 2a + 1) + 9 = 0
x2 + 6x + 9 - (a + 1)2 = 0
(x + 3)2 - (a + 1)2 = 0
[x + 3 - (a + 1)][(x+3)+(a+1)]=0
x - a + 4 = 0 OR x + a + 4 = 0
x - a = -4 ... (i)
x + a = -4 ... (ii)
Adding the two we get
2x = -8
x = -4
From (i), we get
-4 - a = -4
a = 0
x2 + 6x - (a2 + 2a + 1 - 9) = 0
x2 + 6x - (a2 + 2a + 1) + 9 = 0
x2 + 6x + 9 - (a + 1)2 = 0
(x + 3)2 - (a + 1)2 = 0
[x + 3 - (a + 1)][(x+3)+(a+1)]=0
x - a + 4 = 0 OR x + a + 4 = 0
x - a = -4 ... (i)
x + a = -4 ... (ii)
Adding the two we get
2x = -8
x = -4
From (i), we get
-4 - a = -4
a = 0
