Mechanism of Hormone Action
Mechanism of Action of Steroid Hormones:
  • Steroid hormones enter through the cell membrane and then bind to the intracellular receptor to form hormone-receptor complex.
  • This hormone receptor complex binds itself to the specific regions of the DNA.
  • The binding results the gene expression which leads to the physiological and developmental effects of the hormones. 
Mechanism of Action of Peptide Hormones
  • Water-soluble hormones interact with the surface receptors.
  • They do not enter the target cell.
  • As soon as these hormones bind to the surface receptors they generate secondary messengers such as cyclic AMP, calcium ions which regulate the cell metabolism to bring the effect of hormone action.
