why the shells have been named as K,L,M,N instead of A,B,C,D?

Expert Answer
Barkla labelled them with the letters K, L, M, N, O, P, and Q. The origin of this terminology was alphabetic,though later experiments indicated that the K absorption lines are produced by the innermost electrons, this is the reason why k,l,m names are given to shells.
