Why lightning does not get in the soil

Expert Answer
Once the negative charge at the bottom of the cloud gets large enough, a flow of negative charge called a stepped leader rushes toward the Earth. The positive charges at the ground are attracted to the stepped leader, so positive charge flows upward from the ground.
When lightning hits ground it is called cloud-to-ground lightning.
A lightning conductor is a long pointed metal rod fixed on top of the building that is to be protected.
The lower end of the lightning conductor is connected to a metal plate which is buried deep inside the earth with the help of a conducting wire. This is called as the earthing. In rainy season, the roofs of the tall buildings and monuments become wet, so they become good conductors of electricity.
By induction, the upper part of the building i.e. the roof acquires opposite charge (negative charge) and this charge moves to the earth through the earthing system.
If the building does not have any earthing system, the large force of attraction between the positively charged clouds and the negatively charged roof of the building will attract the charge from the cloud to the building which may cause fire and damage the building.
