Laser works on the principle of Stimulated emission.
Stimulated emission is the process by which an incoming photon of a specific frequency can interact
with an excited atomic electron (or other excited molecular state), causing it to drop to a lower energy level.
In Stimulated process, emitted photon is in phase with the incoming photon,
hence we get coherent and monochromatic laser emission.
Other type of emission from excited state of atomic electron is Spontaneous emission
Spontaneous emission takes place without interaction with other photons, and
the direction and phase of emitted photons are random.
Let Aji is the probability for spontaneous emission and Bji is the probability for stimulated emission .
Ratio of probability for spontaneous emission to that of stimulated emission is
directly proportional to cube of frequency.
hence at high frequency spontaneous emission dominates and it is difficult to operate laser at high frequency.
